Mechanical Maintenance Engineer
Mechanical Maintenance Engineer |
Tasman Mill
Oji Fibre Solutions - Forest Resources (Tasman Mill) is strategically located in the sunny Eastern Bay of Plenty, and supplies pulp products to both local and global markets. Our manufacturing operation promotes the efficient and complete use of sustainably sourced virgin wood-fibre from renewable forestry resources.
About the Role
As a Mechanical Maintenance Engineer in our Pulp Team, you’ll take ownership of ensuring the reliability, safety, and performance of critical mechanical assets across a continuously operating industrial environment. Reporting to the Maintenance Manager, you will lead the planning and execution of preventative and corrective maintenance activities, applying strong mechanical engineering fundamentals and sound judgement to maintain plant integrity and avoid unplanned downtime.
In this role, you will:
- Apply strong mechanical engineering expertise to diagnose, analyse, and resolve equipment failures, ensuring robust long‑term solutions rather than temporary fixes.
- Demonstrate diligence and attention to detail in work scoping, maintenance planning, job-pack creation, and documentation within SAP.
- Use SAP and maintenance management systems proactively, ensuring accurate work order creation, history recording, material management, and maintenance optimisation.
- Drive safe work practices, ensuring all maintenance activities align with site safety procedures and engineering standards, including MOC (Management of Change) processes.
- Align execution with asset management strategies, collaborating with operations, engineering, and contractors to lift equipment reliability and performance.
- Lead and support critical shutdowns and breakdown responses, remaining adaptable and prepared when required to restore plant stability quickly and safely.
- Oversee contractor performance, ensuring work is completed safely, to a high standard, and in line with schedule expectations.
- Contribute to continuous improvement, identifying opportunities to enhance reliability, efficiency, and maintenance practices across the plant.
This role is hands‑on, dynamic, and integral to maintaining smooth, safe, and efficient mill operations. Your engineering capability and problem‑solving mindset will directly influence the stability and success of our manufacturing processes.
About You
You are a mechanically strong, detail‑driven engineering professional who takes pride in delivering high‑quality, safe, and reliable maintenance outcomes. With proven experience in large‑scale industrial, manufacturing, or power generation environments, you understand the importance of robust engineering principles, good documentation, and disciplined work execution in a 24/7 operating environment.
We are looking for someone who:
- Holds a Mechanical Engineering qualification and brings strong, practical mechanical engineering skills.
- Has demonstrable experience with maintenance management systems, particularly SAP, including work order management, planning, material handling, and maintenance reporting.
- Works with high diligence and attention to detail, ensuring maintenance tasks are scoped properly, executed safely, and recorded accurately.
- Understands and actively follows MOC processes, appreciating the importance of engineering governance when implementing changes.
- Is strongly safety‑conscious, consistently applying safe work practices and challenging unsafe behaviours or conditions.
- Can operate dynamically in a fast‑paced industrial environment, adjusting priorities when urgent breakdowns or plant challenges arise.
- Shows willingness to step up during shutdowns, outages, or unexpected breakdown events, contributing to safe and timely recovery of plant operations.
- Communicates effectively, building strong working relationships across operations, engineering, and contractor groups.
- Brings problem‑solving excellence, focusing on sustainable, engineering‑sound solutions that reduce recurrence and improve long‑term reliability.
If you take pride in mechanical engineering craftsmanship, thrive in complex operational environments, and enjoy contributing to a team that values reliability, safety, and continuous improvement, this role offers a rewarding opportunity with meaningful impact.
