Project Engineer - Mechanical


At Oji Fibre Solutions – Forest Resources (Kinleith Mill), our manufacturing operation is committed to the efficient and complete use of sustainably sourced virgin wood-fibre from renewable forestry resources.  We take pride in producing world-class market kraft pulps, which are used in a wide range of boards and specialty products around the world.

About the role:

We’re looking for a Project Engineer – Mechanical to join our forward-focused Engineering Team based at Kinleith Mill in Tokoroa. Reporting to the Project Engineering Mechanical Group Lead, this permanent role is ideal for someone who thrives on technical variety, strategic impact, and hands-on project execution.

You’ll play a key role in the mill’s long-term competitiveness, leading capital projects and equipment upgrades, delivering cost and energy efficiencies, and collaborating closely with internal and external stakeholders. This isn’t just another maintenance role—it’s a chance to shape real change at one of New Zealand’s largest industrial sites.

A typical day will see you:

  • Scoping and managing capital projects from design to commissioning
  • Developing robust business cases using stage-gate project processes
  • Leading process and equipment improvement initiatives
  • Working closely with contractors, vendors, and consultants
  • Driving cost-saving and energy efficiency innovations
  • Collaborating across teams to resolve technical issues and plan long-term asset investment

To succeed in this role, you’ll have a Mechanical Engineering degree or NZCE with strong industry experience, and at least five years in heavy industry or similar sectors.  A solid understanding of engineering standards and compliance requirements is essential, along with proven project management skills covering budgets, scheduling, and stakeholder coordination. Just as important is a strong commitment to safety, sustainability, and delivering measurable outcomes. Ideally, you’ll have familiarity with relevant New Zealand legislation such as the Resource Management Act and Major Hazard Facility regulations, and some exposure to contract negotiation or administration.
